I know that there is some different point of views about where the name "Boxing Day" actually comes from and maybe they are all close to the truth I don't know. The Boxing Day sales have never really interested me and I don't recall them ever being a big thing for anyone in my family.
My wife and I didn't get each other anything for Christmas this year, for the last few years we've usually purchased something for ourselves or the house leading up to Christmas. One year we got a home theatre, another year we got new phones. I think we've also counted some of the home renovations we've done as Christmas gifts. This year we didn't really get ourselves or each other anything so we're probably owed something at a later date during the holidays when we feel like heading out shopping.
Growing up, what Boxing Day meant for me is basically two things, the Boxing Day Cricket Test and the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. That's all that Dad watched on the TV and then the cricket and tennis was all that seemed to be on for the rest of the holidays.
When I was a teenager we went to see the Australian Open Tennis a couple of times and that opened my eyes to the difference between what you see on TV and what you experience in the stadium itself. It was on one of these trips to the tennis that my Dad offered to take me to see the cricket at the MCG and I
turned him down. My brother went but it didn't interest me for some reason. I really didn't like cricket much and from memory it was stinking hot that trip. Now that I'm
older, I do want to go at least once to the MCG and see a cricket match or
the AFL as I think that the atmosphere would make a huge difference and
I'd enjoy it a lot more. I still can't get over that they can fit almost
100,000 people in that stadium, it would be something to be part of. I'd really like to take my son to something like that just to see his reaction. I have a feeling that he wouldn't last the whole day watching the cricket and it would probably be too cold for him to watch the AFL but I just think it is something that he should experience. It would be something that he would most likely remember for the rest of his life.
