Well, it's official, last Summer was the hottest on record for Canberra. It beat the previous record which was only a couple of years ago. The region around Canberra was only really settled in the 1840's, Australia's official records for temperature only started 1910 however the oldest records that I can find for Canberra go back to 1895. Due to the methods, type and quality of instruments used, data from that far back can be a little unreliable but it does give an understanding of the weather patterns and the like.
So I think it would be safe to say that last summer was the hottest for at least the last 100 years. It may well be the hottest ever, but that may also be far from the truth.
There is so much information out there about climate change that it is obvious that we are having an effect on the planet, but what can we realistically do about it? China and India are massive polluters and Australia is selling them vast amounts of coal. If Australia cut off it's coal supplies, the nation would probably go broke and China and India would just get their coal from somewhere else. I fear that there isn't much we can actually do about the situation and it is just something that we're going to have to live with.
That's not to say that we should do nothing, we should all be doing as much as we can to help. I feel a little hypocritical considering that we've thrown out three trash paks full of mixed waste that will no doubt be going straight to landfill. Some of it could have been reused or recycled but we were just in a bit of a rush and it was way too easy to just throw stuff out.
Going forward, I'm going to make an extra effort to recycle as much as I can and also return any bottles or cans that have a 10c deposit. There is a place in town where you can return your bottles and cans and get cash back. It has been a little too successful in getting people to recycle items as now we have several groups of people that roam the neighbourhood at night checking everyone's recycle bins on bin night. They rummage through it all looking for things that they can take down town and exchange for money.
