I made it back from Sydney this afternoon and my wife came to collect me with the kids after they'd had their swimming lessons. She dropped me off at work on Monday so I didn't have to leave the bike in the carpark for the two nights I was away for. The trip was pretty good and we got done what we needed to but I tell you what, the Gen Z who was helping me, if he's like other Gen Z's or Gen Y's (as he's kind of at the end of Gen Y and the start of Gen Z) then we're all screwed. I know that I must be getting old when I'm complaining about the kids of today, but this guy takes it to a whole different level.
We had a heap of work to do and I'd go through the next two or three steps with him and he'd get the first part done, but maybe not completely and then he'd stop. After a few minutes I'd notice that he's not doing anything and I'd ask if he was done and he'd say "yeah". I'd then check what he's done and get him to re-do some of it and also ask about the other things that needed doing. He'd then be like, "oh yeah" and then go do one of the other things and then stop again. This went on for the whole trip.
Simple things like arranging to meet in the foyer of the hotel in the morning, or, in the evening when we were going to get something to eat together, we'd arrange a time and then I'd be there a couple of minutes early and he'd be maybe five minutes late. I thought that maybe his watch was slow, so later in the day I asked him what the time was as I thought my watch was wrong, he confirmed that his watch was showing almost the exact same time and as mine.
This morning when I was waiting for him to show up in the foyer of the hotel, I ordered a coffee while I was waiting and was sitting down drinking it when he shows up. He then notices my bag in front of me and asks "are we taking our bags with us?", when I said yes, he went back up the lift to grab his bag and I finished my coffee and was still waiting.
When he shows up with his bag he proceeds to walk out of the hotel without handing in his room key or actually checking out. When I remind him he says "oh yeah" and goes to the hotel desk to check out.
We'd left the car at the office so we didn't have to pay
for parking in Sydney, we'd walked to the hotel with our bags on the
first day, he knew we were leaving after lunch, what did he think we
were going to be doing with our bags? Did he think he could just leave
them in the hotel room until we were ready to come and get them after
lunch? Was he expecting to walk back to the hotel to get them or, did he
want me to drive him back and circle the block half a dozen times
whilst he packed his clothes and brought his bag out?
Bomber
I'm going to teach my kids the right way to do things.
