Graduating Medicine

No, not me, I'm not graduating Medicine. My sister however, she is. Tomorrow is the end of 7 and a half years of study for her. She started studying medicine as a mature age student after her gap year in the UK turned into more of a gap career and she stayed over there for something like six or seven years. When she returned to Australia she wasn't sure what she was going to do and when she decided on trying to get into Medicine she spent a further three or four years applying and moving around to be closer to various universities until she eventually succeeded in securing a position.
I'm heading out tomorrow with my Dad to attend her graduation and see her officially become a Doctor. She still has to do two to three years in a hospital before she is let loose on patients by herself and then she can decide if she wants to specialise in something, or become a GP or, just stay working in Hospitals, or whatever other options are available to her. It's been a pretty hard slog for her and she's had some set backs along the way including a boyfriend who turned out to be more of a hindrance than a help and she stayed with him way too long after he became an unhealthy influence on her. Thankfully, when they did finally go their separate ways she landed on her feet and is now with a great bloke who seems to be good for her and my sister seems to be good for him. Together they are working on improving their situation and will hopefully end up purchasing a house together in the not too distant future.
I'm looking forward to being there when she gets the piece of paper that makes it all official and it's a shame that my Mum isn't around to see it as she would have been so proud of my sister. I think my Dad is pretty pleased with the way things turned out as his father, my Grandpa, was a Doctor so Dad will be happy that medicine is still in the family, not to mention all the free check-ups and bulk billing he'll be getting from now on.
